Shanghai
The period in time where we lived in China has been one of the most impressive periods in my life.
The work I made in Shanghai can be summarized in one sentence: ‘All these lives’
More than ever, I was aware of the fact that behind every window, in every skyscraper, all shophouses people live their own personal lives, yet we know nothing about them.
All these people have their own worries, troubles and thoughts, like we all have personally. Their own doubts, family intrigues, hopes and dreams. What we see is just the tip of the iceberg, of their reality.
What fascinated me was the laundry that was hanging from countless balconies from the high rise buildings, or sometimes just running accross the street or pavement on improvised lines, decorating the street like graceful dancers.
It was not just the visual attraction, but also the idea that the laundry could tell a story about the lives of the people hidden behind the laundry.
